Writing an AI Ethics Policy

How to write an AI ethics policy that people actually use, including AI and academic integrity.

An AI ethics policy fails when it reads like a philosophy essay. It works when it answers the questions people actually have: what can I use, when, and what do I have to check?

Keep it usable

  • State approved and prohibited uses in plain language.
  • Define a review gate for new or higher-risk uses of AI.
  • Point to the owner who can answer edge cases.

Do not forget context

For schools and universities, AI and academic integrity is now a central concern — a good policy covers disclosure, permitted assistance and assessment design, not just data handling.

Where this fits

An AI ethics policy is the human-readable face of your AI governance framework. To formalise the structure behind it, see ISO 42001.
